Tom Mackie's Landscape Photography Secrets

by Tom Mackie

Here, in a great variety of unexpected and original compositions, Tom Mackie shows why decades behind the unrelenting groundglass of a 5 x 4 view camera have made him one of the world's best landscape photographers. Whether the landscape is urban at night or a tropical beach at noon, Mackie nearly always has something in his work which makes each image different from the last, rather than following a predictable formula. He also keeps detailed notes and can provide clear and well expressed insights into the process of taking each shot.

He has moved on from 5 x 4 to rollfilm and panoramics, and embraced the usual box of grads and filters (normally the Lee system) which are used in corrective rather than manipulative ways, to ensure the carefully spot-metered exposure is dead right on film. The views are generally of calendar quality and have a repose which is ideal for that market. Framing and camera position are always as near perfect as you can imagine for the shot. This book does not even go near digital; it is entirely about film. However, there are many good lessons for the digital photographer contained in it. Technically as sound as you expect from an American trained Fellow of the BIPP. Highly recommended.

Digital Video

by Tom Ang

I suffer from a serious case of Tom Angst. If Mr Ang is so prolific, takes such good photos, travels so widely and can still find time to hold down several jobs and write such complex and structured volumes on something outside his specialisation, what chance have the rest of us? Even Tom's family... read more
